At Easter time, Easter bunnies lay their chocolate eggs in people’s gardens.

Hopeful children search the flowerbeds for surprises left by the bunnies, and parents are only too happy to see their flowerbeds being cleared out. These are just some of the traditions people connect with Easter.

Easter practicalities

In many European countries, Easter serves several purposes. First of all, it is a holiday and many people have some time off. Also it is the commemoration of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. On top of this, many people use Easter as an opportunity to spend time with relatives and friends, often over a good lunch or dinner.

So, while many people go to Church and thereby celebrate the religious side of Easter, the non-religious (secular) and pagan traditions are also important: e.g. the decoration of eggs, hunting for decorated eggs and chocolate eggs, the Easter Bunny, rolling decorated eggs down a hill, reading crime stories etc.

Many of the pagan traditions are related to spring, blossoming and new beginnings, and this is clear from the general importance of eggs.

The Holy Week of Easter

Easter is a movable festival, and this means that it does not fall on the same date every year. Rather the date of Easter changes according to the moon every year, but Easter always falls on a Sunday between 22 March and 25 April, according to the Gregorian calendar. Apart from the Easter Sunday, most countries celebrating Easter also have some public holidays in the Holy Week:

- Palm Sunday (Sunday before Easter)

- Maundy Thursday

- Good Friday

- Easter Sunday

- Easter Monday

Public holidays also mean that shops, museums and attractions may be closed. So make sure to check the local opening hours for public holidays before you go shopping on Good Friday or visit an art museum on Easter Monday; they may be closed.
